Roadways

Vehicle transportation along the Prefecture's north-south axis and connecting Tochigi to the rest of the country are the Tohoku Expressway (connecting Kawaguchi and Aomori) and the new & old National Route 4's; from east to west spans National Route 50 and connects south Tochigi with Ibaraki and Gunma Prefectures.
Also connecting Tochigi, Gunma, and Ibaraki is the Kita-Kanto highway. Set to be fully completed and open for use by 2011, it will link the region’s other main transport arteries: the Tohoku Expressway, the Joban Expressway and the Kan’etsu Expressway, securing for Tochigi a vital link to the International port of Hitachinaka in Ibaraki, and ensuring its continued progress as it expands its reach.
Railways

The main railways running north and south in Tochigi are the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train) and the JR Utsunomiya Train Line. From Tokyo station the bullet train can reach Oyama (south Tochigi) in 43 minutes, with the fastest trains arriving in Utsunomiya in a mere 48 minutes. Because of this, parts of Tochigi are even within commuting range to downtown Tokyo. Along the east and west, the Mito and Ryomo Train Lines connect Tochigi to Ibaraki and Gunma Prefectures, respectively.
As for cargo transportation, freight train containers have a hub in Utsunomiya at the Utsunomiya Cargo Station. Your shipment can be in Tokyo in 3 1/2 hours, or even as far away as Osaka in around 11 hours.
Air
Within an hour's drive along the Tohoku Expressway from the Utsunomiya I.C. you can get to Fukushima Airport. Tochigi has also set up many heliports throughout the Prefecture, providing additional air transportation not only for tourism and cargo, but also aid in the event of natural disasters and medical emergencies.
