We visited HOYA Technosurgical Corporation Mashiko Factory, who provides superior products in the field of orthopedic surgery, and interviewed with Yoshiyuki Suzuki, General Manager of the plant. The company had a name change in October 2013 to HOYA Technosurgical Corporation in HOYA Corporation group, and promoting medical ceramic artificial bones and metallic orthopedic implants business.

Business Basics

HOYA Corporation is a comprehensive optical equipment manufacture, providing production, marketing and service of precision instruments with focusing on the optical technologies in the field of information and communication, eye care products such as optical lenses, eye glass or contact lenses, and intraocular lenses, endoscope, etc. in the medical field, and lens modules for digital cameras.

Mashiko Factory used to have a comprehensive production of single-lens reflex cameras when it was established in 1968. Currently as the HOYA Technosurgical corporation - Mashiko Plant, this plant produces apatite products for bone regenerating agents.

Tochigi Prefecture and its Business Environment

When this plant was established natural water available for the production of cameras was focused, and this site was nominated because of a high quality and abundance of natural water.
Logistics also had been taken in considerations. Within a distance of 100 km from Tokyo was another important reason to finalize here in Mashiko.

Made in Tochigi

The apatite products, as bone regenerating agents, are produced only in this Mashiko Factory in HOYA group companies. We have developed the world first artificial tooth root made of hydroxyapatite ceramics by our continued efforts on researches.

Our ceramics artificial bone "APACERAM" products maintain overwhelming share in the market of ceramics artificial bones. In Europe or North America, they have been used multi-purposely property to absorb protein, and future growth are expected.

Contributing Local Community

We used to have, till two years ago, a camera museum in this plant. After visiting potteries in Mashiko, visitors could visit there, but it is not existing now. Some of our previously owned cameras can be founded at the Japan camera museum in Tokyo now.
For the people in this communities, we are cosponsoring the events organized by Mashiko Town such as Ajisai- festival and Ekiden-competition, etc..
