Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. is developing various business as cement business in the core, mineral resources, construction materials, optoelectronics, and new materials business. In this issue we visited Tochigi plant in Sano City, and interviewed with Takafumi Miyake, Manager of Administration Section.

Business Basics

【Biomass Power Generation Facilities】

Our plant is only one cement factory in Tochigi Prefecture, located in Kuzuu district in Sano City at southern part of Tochigi Prefecture with having a limestone mine (Karasawa mine) which produces raw materials for cements.
We manufacture and deliver various products such as a variety of cements and materials for improvements of foundations.

Under the corporate philosophy of "Considering global environment, we contribute for maintaining and developing of prosperous society through continuous technological developments and wide range of business activities", we achieve the de-pollution of waste in high-temperature-burning and recycling of waste to the raw materials by utilizing the technology of high-temperature-burning in the cement production process.

In order to contribute both for the local economy and environment, we are accepting "Recycle-able waste" produced by industries and municipal governments, and recycling them as a raw material or a replacement energy for limestone processing as a member's roll of the recycling society.
In April 2009, we had started an operation of the biomass power generation station fueled by woody biomass, in participating to the "Green revitalizing projects". We are contributing for the prevention of global warming by providing a cleaner electricity power of less environment impacts, reducing the emissions of CO2 by replacing fossil fuels or coals to timbers obtained from the forest thinning.

Tochigi Prefecture and its Business Environment

Sano City is blessed with abundant water and situated in a good location within 70 km from the Tokyo metropolitan area, our cement products are shipped widely to the south Tohoku regions, in addition to the Tokyo metropolitan area.
From the point of recycling business, the southern part of Tochigi is a good location for collection of waste from a lot of manufacturers. With a completion of the Kitakanto Expressway in March 2011, Sano City area is expected to be developed further for Trucking terminals etc. in locating at the crossing point of the Kitakanto Expressway connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Japanese Sea in east to west, and the Tohoku Expressway in south to north.

A further reduction of the transportation cost may possibly attract more as a logistic point, by shipping Tochigi made resources, such as lumbers and limestones, to the center of Tokyo and by taking products back to Tochigi in return freight.

Made in Tochigi

Kuzuu district in Sano City has been know as a rich resource of limestone for many years, by providing limestone for repairing Edo-castle in ancient periods.
Our plant produces made in Tochigi cement made from limestone of this area as one of the main raw materials.

Contributing Local Community

The cement industry is built on closer relationship with local community. To maintain better communications, plant tours for students, government people and local residents, cleaning activities of surrounding roads, and environmental improvements are performed. Also participation for "Kuzuu Festa", and illumination light ups of factory facilities in Christmas time are well appreciated by the people in the community.
Further more, we are trying to employ more local people for consideration of keeping younger generations in the town.

Comments for the People in Tochigi

【light up Illuminations】

In aiming to a contribution for improvements of forest resources, we would like to contribute to for the project of "Genkina Morizukuri (development of healthy forest)" by the effective use of materials such as thinned woods.
It would be appreciated if more people in Tochigi could visit us to have a opportunity to introduce our broad range of activities.
