With having its headquarters in the US, and having manufacturing of silicon wafers in Utsunomiya, MEMC develops solar battery and solar power generation business in worldwide. We visited MEMC Japan Ltd. headquarters and Utsunomiya plant, and interviewed with Takayuki Muneta, CEO and President.

Business Basics

【Silicon Wafers】

MEMC has the headquarters in the US, and are manufacturing and marketing silicon wafers based on 9 plants in 6 countries, in Italy, Malaysia, Korea, Republic of China, etc. As a group company, solar panels and solar energy business are the area the company is putting efforts.
In Japan, mainly 300mm silicon wafers are manufactured, with taking well-known semi-conductor manufacturers as business partners, we are leading the industry by developing the most advanced technologies in seamless manners.
Nobody can think of the life without the semiconductor technologies in our today's life. Silicon wafers are the foundation of IC circuit equipped a great number of electronic equipment like as PC, mobile phones, and game machines, and they are indispensable for any type of electronics equipment.

Infrastructures must have for the operation of the plan. Utsunomiya plant consumes 2,700 tons of water a day, a stable supply of water is the key for sustaining our business operations.

Within MEMC group, Utsunomiya plant manufactures a high quality of products and they are sold in world wide. We appreciated very much for the support provided from people in the local community that enable us to continue our stable manufacturing of high quality of products.
As you can imagine from the use of a vast amount of water of 2,700 tons every day, water is indispensable to our operations. By utilizing the stable water resource, we are able to supply high quality of products continuously.

Contributing Local Community

Our company cosponsors the Food Drive Project activities. We are donating food and fund-raised to the House of Stars which operated by the NPO Supporting Independence of Young Peoples through the Utsunomiya Social Welfare Council Volunteer Center.
Further, we are challenging to the reduction of Food-mileage at company's cafeteria. In the Award of Tochigi Prefecture Maronie Eco Business (in Food Mileage Reduction Section), we had been awarded on the excellence of 2010 by the Governor in December. We would like to actively support the local produce and consumptions project, in preparing a menu with local made materials in every month continuously.

Comments for the People in Tochigi

The development of infrastructure is a must for our plant operations. Without understandings and supports of the local community people on our business, it is not feasible to maintain today's superb environment. We would like to continue our better relationship in communicating with the people in the local community.
MEMC group is promoting solar battery and solar energy business, we do our best to be recognized as an eco-business company either.
