As a food manufacture delivering "Delicious and happiness" for all over the world with carefully selected raw materials, Maruha Nichiro Foods, Inc. is developing aggressive activities. In this issue we visited Utsunomiya plant in Kiyohara Industry Park, and interviewed with Mitsuo Takano, Manager of Administration Section.

Business@Basics

y Corporate Brand z

This plant was originally founded as Utsunomiya plant of Taiyo Seafoods Co., Ltd., a subsidiary company of Taiyo Gyogyo Co., Ltd., in 1983. Since then, through the acquisition by Maruha Co., Ltd. and a merger with Nichiro Co., Ltd., we formed current Maruha Nichiro Foods, Inc. Utsunomiya plant.@This is one of six directly operated plants in our company in Japan.

This plant mainly manufactures ham-sausage products and seared tuna for commercial use.
The ham-sausage products include "Fish Sausage", "Cheese Kamaboko", and "Risara",etc. The seared tuna products for commercial use are utilized in Gunkan-maki (sushi wrapped with dried seaweed) sold at large retail stores, and Eho-maki (sushi roll) at Setsubun (the traditional end of winter) recently. We produce more volume of ham and sausages than seared tuna.

Tochigi Prefecture and its Business Environment

A closer distance from the Tokyo metropolitan area, and convenient access to road transportation networks from the aspect of logistics are the main reasons for selection of this location. In addition, as a relevant company of seafoods, our productions had been made at plants located near seashore in the past, but this plant was established by the decision that inland plant is feasible because all raw materials for ham-sausage products are procured in minced fish or meat eliminating pre processing.

Within the plant, there is a distribution center where other plant produced products are collected and delivered to all areas in East Japan. The well developed transportation networks provides a merit for our products distribution.

y Products Produced in Utsunomiya Plant z

Within our premises, there is a plant for manufacturing fine chemical products such as hyaluronic acid, and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). The DHA contained our ham-sausage products, "Risara", is manufactured only in this plant among all other plants in Japan.

"Risara" is a kind of fish sausage containing 850 mg of DHA per piece. It is an approved healthy foods for dieting, and daily habitable tasting of one piece may reduces the blood triglyceride level which may lead to to coronary artery diseases.
It is recommendable not only for those who concerns with the triglyceride level but also for all ages from children to elderly because of "Risara" is healthy food.

Contributing Local Community

Within Kiyohara Industrial Park, cleaning and traffic safety activities are periodically held in three to four times per year.

Also since last year, we are conducting a social learning plant tour for pupils of local elementary schools. It had been well accepted and its capacity was filled within 30 minutes from the start of the registrations. From now on, we continue this activity with hoping to contribute for an improvement of the local educational environments.

For environment, we are promoting a reduction of CO2 with defining our target. For example, we had replaced our boilers with economy type in last two years, and are now planning to replace gas of refrigerators to Non-Freon type natural refrigerants completely.

Comments for the People in Tochigi

We assume that it is not so popular for the local people that "Cheese Kamaboko", and "Risara" are produced in this plant. It would be greatly appreciated if more people taste our Tochigi made products.
