In order to promote "Recycling of Steel resources" and to prevent the global warming, Tokyo Steel Co., Ltd. is playing an active roll as a technology pioneer of electric furnace method which utilizes a clean energy. In this issue we visited Utsunomiya plant, and interviewed with Hiromi Kawamoto, Plant Manager, and Yasuyoshi Yoshikawa, Manager of Safety Environment General Administration Section.
【H beams（Upper） & Channels（Lower）】
Since founded, our company operates the recycling of steel scraps as our core business. And by utilizing the electric furnace method which utilizes a clean electric energy, our company produces so called electric furnace products such as small-sized beams and reinforce bars for concrete construction. Also H beams, sheet plates, heavy plates, hot rolled coils, checkered coils, and hot-dip galvanized coils which had been dominated by the manufacture of the blast furnaces also are produced. Utsunomiya plant produces H beams and channels.
Those facts, that the Kanto region is the biggest market of raw materials of steel scraps in Japan and it is suitable for procuring, and the availability of required electricity for manufacturing, a abundant water from Kinugawa river, etc., had fulfilled location conditions for steel industry.
Tochigi has a famous product of thunders in summer, but it is stable without severe wind or flooding disasters. We do not need to worry about any storm surge causes by typhoons in other coastal areas.
【Processing Line】
Within a total accumulated steel volume of 1.3 billion ton in Japan, about 4,000 ton of scrap steels were recovered every year, and further increased use of recycling steel is in an urgent need.
Concerned with the emission level of CO2, when making one ton of steel, the electric furnace emits only one fourth of the blast furnace method which utilize iron ore and coal as its main raw materials.
From the stand points of recycling and the prevention of global warming, steel products made by the electric furnace method are really earth conscious eco-steels.
Since our operation had been started in 1995, our plant have produced eco-steels used in various buildings as a component.
【Cleaning Up Activity】
Since 1998, Cleaning up activities around our factory had been conducted every week. Even there was praising words from the local community, we will continue this activity. In addition, we are playing softball games since 2002. Only our team and other two local teams played at the first time, however its numbers had been increased year by year, nowadays under the sponsorships of Kiyohara Industry Park Administration Association, its became a communication place with a total of 10 participants from companies and local teams in last year's 9th event.
We have been operating in here for 15 years, a total accumulated production of eco-steels reached to 7 million tons. We feel that finally we could become a member of this community. We do our best to contribute further to Tochigi Prefecture, Utsunomiya City, and for the local community as an excellent corporate citizens in Tochigi.
