- The term 'Karakasa' refers to a type of traditional Japanese umbrella, which is an oil-paper umbrella with a bamboo frame. Only the top of the tree has strangely spread branches, resembling the shape of an umbrella, which is why it is called 'Karakasa Cedar'.
