It is a 2.9 meter high stone Jizo statue. According to legend, it was erected by Kobo Daishi at Kanmangafuchi Abyss in Nikko. It was swept away by a great flood and buried in the sandbanks of the Daiya River. A nearby stonemason, thinking it was just an ordinary large stone, drove a wedge into it, causing red blood to seep out. The indentation said to be from the wedge remains to this day.
